Something’s Fishy

Our Saturday night was well planned – watch a play and have seafood for dinner. So it started with an English play ‘By George’, directed by Naseerudin Shah at Prithvi Theatre, followed by dinner at the very popular restaurant called Something’s Fishy, a part of Hotel Tunga International at Andheri East, Mumbai. What we didn’t know, that our well planned Saturday night would turn out to be so fishy!

This used to be our favourite restaurant as it offered a wide spread of seafood in their buffet lunch or during à la carte dinners. While the ambience is still the same, sadly the quality of food has dropped considerably.

We started out with the very famous Bombil (Bombay Duck) fry and Calamari Pepper Sauce. Both were done to perfection, no complaints about that. But the stewards seemed to be a bit lost. They served us two portions of Bombay Duck fry, instead of one (we had asked for one portion).

We did bring it to their notice, but they had already served it on our plates. So obviously we couldn’t ask them to take it out from our plates! The Calamari was really good, nice and spicy, hot and delicious.

I had ordered for the famous Sol Kadi that compliments sea food so well. But alas, it didn’t meet my expectations. The flavours just didn’t come through. It seemed as though they pour the Sol Kadi in the serving glass, chill it and serve it as is, without mixing it well. The flavours had settled at the bottom, leaving the drink lifeless.

We ordered for our all time favourite pomfret Goan curry, steam rice and tava prawns. Pomfret was charged as per size, Rs. 1,100/- and tava prawns were priced at Rs. 495/-. They did something what they shouldn’t have. They mixed pieces of pomfret from two different fish. As a result, the piece of fish that I got was smelly and bad, while the others were saved of this torture.

Initially I thought maybe my taste buds were running overdrive. Thankfully for the second helping when someone else had a bite of the fish, they just couldn’t eat another morsel. The fish was bad! We did inform the staff, but that couldn’t save us from a bad dining experience. The tava prawns were not too good either. They destroyed the delicious and soft prawns by cooking it in a soggy, mish-mash gravy; we were hoping it would be a dry item that will go with the Goan curry gravy, but it wasn’t.

Finally, the bill arrived with a 10% discount as to make up for the bad fish; but unfortunately for us, this has been a truly fishy affair to remember!
