Launched in April 1960, Flora is one of the first Chinese restaurants to have started in the city of Mumbai and I’m glad they did and have maintained the standard of good food ever since.
Most Bengalis swear by the Chinese food that we get at Tangra’s in Calcutta’s very own China Town. But what about probashis like us, who live away from our hometown? Well, Flora is the answer to Calcutta style authentic Chinese food in Mumbai.
I know you must be thinking what a weird combination it must be – ‘Calcutta style authentic Chinese food’. Well, it is all thanks to the China Town in Kolkata that has the city dwellers thronging for some excellent Chinese cuisine that is yet to be discovered anywhere else!
The ambience is refreshingly neat, clean with no fancy red lights and Chinese music that you usually get to hear in most restaurants. The crockery is simple plain bone china and the seating comfortable. Let’s put it straight, it does not give you the feel of an upmarket restaurant like Mainland China, but it is definitely an extremely popular and a well known restaurant that people have been visiting for years. It’s a place where families, office crowds and friends can meet up for drink and dinner, no strings attached!
Okay, coming to the point, what can you try here – go for the seafood soup – it’s awesome; its got crab, fish and prawns blended beautifully in a heartwarming concoction that you so desire after a traffic jam in the city. Try the salt and pepper fish, chicken stewed wontons or pork roast for starters. For the main course try the regular noodles and fried rice of your choice and compliment it with Honey Prawns in Black Bean Sauce – it’s absolutely lip smacking.
The diners at Flora seem to be regulars as they acknowledge other fellow diners when they walk in. Flora is a reminiscence of a club like the ones you have in Kolkata, where members drop by for a drink and dinner with friends. It opens only from 7pm onwards, booking on weekends is advisable.
